I.e. the less survival urge one has, the more 'alive' he/she is?<br /><br />This is of course one of the ways to think about life (somewhat mechanical), but I think drives and survival instincts are way too overemphasized.<br /><br />By the way, one of the premises for the Scary Idea from SIAI (earlier post on the blog) seems to be rooted exactly in that: if AGI is based on survival-urge, it will wipe human race. Character is part of identity which i regard as a useful mental construct in that it allows continuity in the way i and others relate to me. In my life i have always striven to 'better' myself in my own perception, which i found to often coincide with that of others. This change can be fundamental enough, especially but not only in long lives, to cause a complete character transformation. In any case i have never intuitively or intellectually experienced an urge to preserve it. But my problem may, as so often, be due mainly to the loosely defined and understood meaning of the term character.
